Arts Midwest World Fest – Cudamani
On Sept 20 Custer School District students will again have the opportunity for another World Fest experience. Hailing from the village of Pengosekan, Çudamani performs a highly creative musical and dance repertoire that is vibrant, technical, and free spirited. Evoking both contemporary vitality and dedication to Balinese traditions, the ensemble brings to life vivid tales of gods, heroes, and the cosmos in Balinese mythology. All will enjoy the inspired and complex tones of Çudamani and be instantly transported to the rich and diverse islands of Indonesia.
Cudamani is made possible through a grant to the Hill City Arts Council in conjunction with Custer Area Arts Council from Arts Midwest. Its purpose is to foster an understanding of and appreciation for global uniqueness and differences. The school workshops will last approximately 50 minutes and will guarantee an opportunity to learn, experience music, interact with the group and a time for question and answers. Community members are also invited to attend the school workshops. The schedule for the Custer Schools on Sept 20 is as follows:
Thursday, Sept 208
  • 9:00 A.M. Custer High School, grades 9-12. Music students with option for all teachers to bring classes.
    • o The CHS workshop is being held during the music time for music students, however, any teachers who would like their students to benefit from this opportunity are welcome to bring them their class to the theater during 3rd hour. It is open to all, and we encourage your participation.
  • 10:00 A.M. Custer Elementary and Custer Jr. High. All preK – 8th grade students report to the High School theater
  • 2:00 – Hermosa & Rural Schools K - 8.

To extend the cultural experience to the classroom, Arts Midwest provides participating communities with a “curriculum” that helps students and teachers better understand and appreciate the customs and traditions of the visiting ensembles. It is the hope that studying other cultures will spark a lasting curiosity in both teachers and students that will result in further exploration of the diverse and fascinating cultures of the world. I have attached the curriculum guide for your use if you find they would fit into your curriculum in any way.
The week-long Cudamani residency will consist of school and community workshops, and outreach activities, and culminate in a public concert which will be held Sept 21 at 7:00 pm in the Hill City High School Theater. The public is also invited to a welcome reception on Sept 16 at 6:00 p.m. at the Best Western Golden Spike in Hill City, as well as a community workshop held at 5:30 pm on Sept 19 at the Grand Magic Show Barn in Custer..
